Toto's Tidings
Hi All,
Welcome to Toto’s Tidings. I am pleased to share my enthusiasm for Internet Bridge and especially for the players I have met. I began playing in February 2000 and during that time I was a journalist for The Boca Raton News. I wrote a weekly commentary column and began to include stories about my experiences. They were well received by my readers, including non-players. I soon had enough stories to write a book, Playing Around…My Adventures on the Zone.com. MSN loved the book and sponsored me. I have also written articles for the MSN Community site.
Now that I play on BBO I have discovered even greater joy. I will begin with some highlights from the past, and add new profiles and articles of interest with the focus on fun. I shall leave the technical aspects of Bridge to the experts.
I have chosen a popular subject for my first tiding. I think many of you might find yourself included or know some of the players who are. Additional articles will be dated and appear in ascending order.

Playing Around...My Adventures on the Zone.com can be ordered through Amazon, Barnes & Noble online, or through local book stores. I have discounted it for members and for an inscription and autographed copy please contact me at dorothyr311@msn.com.
“In the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes,” pronounced artist Andy Warhol in the 1960’s. It became a catch all phrase without much thought given to its meaning.
As a writer, I felt I had a modicum of fame for many years. I was known to my readers although they were most often not known to me.
Now we must remember that Warhol’s words were spoken before the advent of the Internet. Had he lived after that, his statement would have been more appropriate or perhaps not made at all.
I achieved distinction when I moved to Boca Raton and wrote more frequently and began to meet many of my readers. Perhaps that was my fifteen minutes.
Then, in October 2003, my book about playing bridge on the MSN Zone Game Site was published. Microsoft loved the book and chose to sponsor me. I appeared in an interview on the MSN Zone and the book was advertised there. I was sent on a five city book and media tour. I was interviewed by newspapers in several major cities, and appeared on radio and television. By the time I was interviewed on CNN, I was known by a wider audience than ever before.
When MSN closed their bridge site, I switched to playing on a wonderful site known as Basic Bridge Online. Many players knew me from the Zone and began to question me about my book and myself. My favorite line was to tell them to look me up on any search engine and they will learn everything about me except my weight. At that time, I thought the online stories about me were limited to the book I wrote and the articles for MSN. I never checked it out thoroughly, until last week. I was showing someone how you find a person on the Internet and typed in my name as an example.
I was stunned by the amount of material about me. There were reprints of articles I wrote in the New York Times and other papers as well, dating back 40 years. And others I wrote right up to the present time. There are recent columns which ran in the Boca Raton and West Boca Forum with headlines attributing the content to the Sun Sentinel and to Forum Publications.
Now back to the true meaning of fame. We may never know what Warhol meant, but I appreciate what it means to me. I may not be as famous as Brangelina and DListed Kathy Griffin, but I feel tremendous joy that my fame has surely spread, and I will be known as long as the Internet exists.

June 14, 2007 One Year Later By Dorothy Rosencrans Hornet’s Nest became a year old in June. What a wonderful birthday this is. From less than 100 members, we have grown to over 1,000. I am full of joy at how far we have come. I delight in the good bridge and fun we have had. It is time to reflect upon the accomplishments that made this so. Many of us mourned the loss of MSN Zone Bridge. Other sites were offered to us, but those who had already played on BBO knew this was the best. I was convinced by the personal email sent to us on the Zone by Fred Gitelman. In turn, I sent his email to every other Zone player I knew and was delighted when many became a part of BBO as well. Very soon, Jim Beam enlisted a group of others and formed Hornet’s Nest. It was decided that there be a tournament every night at 8 PM with the exception of Monday’s when we would play on Kaiserzell’s tourney which had existed before we began, and she was a friend to many Hornets. Paul Singleton along with creampuff, helenjon, and xfco began an individual tournament earlier in the evening and other hosts would run additional tourneys to fill in open times. The other hosts who act as Tournament Directors or TD’s are Peggy Pool who has developed this fabulous web site and serves as Social Director. Dick Milne, Carol Haenel, Peggy Elgin, Sue, Jo, Misha1, Tigris, Rick (gremlin345), Rick (SlickRick2), Irene, Anba and Hope. These hosts are competent, and charming and warm. They turn each tourney into pleasure. While all of us can not receive the top scores each night, or any night, we can all receive the gift of friendship and fun. I have found the additional good fortune of meeting many new players who are Hornets members. I have also met others at social tables or in other tournaments whom I have engaged as new members. I never cease to be amazed by the variety of countries from which our players come. Although our tournaments are run with English as the required language for bidding and chat, and the hour is very late for many areas, it has not deterred people from every corner of the globe to join us. We also have a wonderful web site here. In addition to statistics and bridge information, it is much more. It promotes friendships with photos of the players, an art gallery of their work, poems, jokes, cartoons and a page by yours truly. Your words of wisdom or wit written on your profile are acknowledged there. Happy Birthday dear Nesters! May we celebrate many more years to come. |
Thoughts of Tournament 4/29 by
Dorothy Rosencrans
I never thought that I would see
A hand as bad as that given me
On Sunday Night in Hornet's Nest
I was so far from the best.
My partner did have a bid or two
I couldn't ever see her through.
We sat & watched the opps score
It was frustrating, it was a bore.
The only thought that cheers me some
Is that good luck is bound to come.
Keep on playing and hope for the best,
If not, I will just cope with the rest.
Playing every night with friends
I do know that bad luck ends.
So I toast the next time we play,
And after that the very next day.
When partner & I will rise above the rest
And play really well until we are the best.
AMEN

The Connection
By Dorothy Rosencrans
Prior to using a computer people had told me, "Don’t take the Internet seriously. The people aren’t real." I was told many stories of heartache. I was to witness pain, sorrow, and intense love. I would see peoples’ hearts printed out for the world to see, in hopes it will touch someone.
Yes, there were occasional glimpses into people like those described to me. However, one of the most important things I have seen is something I can best describe as a "Connection." I have found this connection by playing bridge on the Internet, where I was to learn it is far more than a game. It’s hard to imagine unless you have been there. When people get together, over the miles, state-to-state, country-to-country and they connect. Really connect.
It amazing, absolutely amazing. It’s a connection that is not about man to woman. It is about connecting as friend to friend. I’m talking about some people you have met that you would soon know were going to be important in your life. You have gotten to know them across the bridge table or through chats in the lobby, and then extended the connection through email, and with some by phone.
These are people you laugh with, joke with, cry with, and hurt for when they are hurting. They make you worry, or make you crazy, because they are the ones who touch you deep inside .You share a connection that allows you to do the same to them.
These are the ones whom you miss once they are no longer there, but you wish they were. You are thankful for the memories you have. If you have ever experienced this type of connection with someone you have never met, face to face, you have indeed been blessed. I know, that without a doubt that I have.
Therefore, every profile on BBO is important to me. Not just for the systems and level of play but the facts about the player. When I see the word private in answer to every question on the profile, I feel badly, not for myself, but for those who will not share themselves with others. They cannot become part of the connection.
The connection has room for all. Each new person I meet enriches my life and those who remain aloof, miss all I have described. Profiles can be changed, think about it.

What's in a Name?
by Dorothy Rosencrans
For several years, I have enjoyed the player nicknames that I see on MSN Games. Many of them are very clever and innovative. As a writer, I am prone to notice such items, many of which became the subject of a newspaper column. When I wrote my book, the Zone names were so good I used them in two separate chapters. I will now share many of my favorites with you.
Please note that for clarity, I have properly punctuated and spaced the names. I also omitted any numbers so as not to intrude upon anyone.
In many instances, a player's gender and location are not revealed by their choice of nicknames. I like to find out by chatting. During one game of Bridge, the players at my table were from Egypt, England, and Argentina. The names they used were Super Duper, Star Man, and Puter Pad. Not one of those names identified the person until I asked.
My own nickname is Toto. I have always loved The Wizard of Oz and I thought Toto would be a good alter ego. As a nickname, it is short, easy to spell, and does not reveal my gender, all of which makes it a perfect cover. I have also found it helpful in determining where I would play. A sense of humor is most important in any situation, so when I approach a table and anyone refers to Kansas or Oz, I know I’ll enjoy the company.
The names chosen by others obviously reflect their varied interests or inclinations. Many have picked animal names or associations, as did I. So far, I have met Donald Duck, Sneezy Zebra, Dumbo, Sea Urchin, Snoopy, Porky Pig, Calico Cat, Reluctant Shark, Raging Bull, and Bambi. Others have given the animal name a humorous twist, so you may run into Rin Tin Toon, Peter Rare Bit, Lassie Dog Gone, Dumb Doggy, Top Cat, Rubber Duck, or Scooby Deux.
There are also names that reflect emotions. I introduced Cheerful to Smiles. Others with the same upbeat attitude are Blissful Spirit, Happy, Hopeful, Good Humor, and Happy Heart. Unfortunately, you will also find those with Bitter Spirits, Wicked Thoughts, the Kiss of Death, Bad Habits, and those who are Sorrowful, Mad, Very Cranky, Unhappy, Moody, Tearful, and Sans Joie, which is French for without joy. I hope he meets Say C Bon.
I often wonder if the people who choose names associated with food are overweight or just clever. Anchovy Delight, Goldie Lox, Wry Toast, Coco Beanie, Malva Toast, Tuny Fish, Nutmeg, Fat Frank, Human Beans, Creampuff, and Sweetie Pie are fun. There are some beverages in the mix as well; I have found Dr. Pepper Upper, Ryan Coke, Gin Fizz, Apricot Brandy, Black Coffee, Ice Cream Soda, and Pure Water.
The same is true for sports enthusiasts. Golf players are numerous, as noted by their names. There is Golf Gal, Golf Guy, Golf Bag, Wedge, Putter, Sand Trap, Good Green, Bumpy Fairway, In the Ruff, and Hi Handicap. I have seen similar nicknames for tennis players, football fans and those associated with more esoteric sports as well.
Some people use their own or a given name, and add a comic touch. Among them are Bob Apple, Diana Rossa, Quite Frank, Carol Pool, King George, Don Kehote, Rusty Male, and Uncle Tom Tom. The names of deceased famous people are very popular, as are fictional and cartoon characters. Prominent people who are still alive may have their name used, albeit with minor variations. I like the names Claire De Lune, Al Capone, Money Lisa, Rhett Butler, and of course, Scarlett O’Hara. Other players include Tom Cruises, Bob Hopes, Jane Ayre, Woody Allan, Eli Lilly, Roland Garros, and Paul Gaugain. There is even Pharaoh, Big Ben, Eewok, Raggety Ann and Ivanna Trump A lot.
Occupations, either actual or imagined, comprise Virtual Plumber, Milkman, Postman, Bandit, Good Doctor, Conductor, Bus Boy, Waiter, Mrs. Mother, Spastic Surgeon, Rich Lawyer, First Lady, and I’m President. In a religious manner, others are defined as Father Rabbi, Novice Nun, Friar Luck, Cardinal Sin, and O My Lord.
Those with weather on their mind include Raindrops, Snowdrops, Windy, Cloudy, Summer Snow, Sun Spot, Stormy Weather, and No Rain, which lead first to Muddy Dirt and then to Dry Dirt.
Many imaginative names have no particular reference… or do they? For example, there is Boo Hoo, Like A Virgin, Psychothrill, Nude on Beach, Comcast, Big Now, Finest Body, Wat’s The Problem, Who’s Da Best, Oma Papa, Toilet Trained and Untrainable. I conclude this group with the appropriate nicknames of Ad Infitium, and Ad Nausem.
Keeping the title of this article in mind, it is fitting to tell you about the time a woman named Rose joined our table. After introducing ourselves, my friend Rob asked her, "Rose, are you known by any other name?"
